When I was a tyke - real little, maybe six or so - Mum took me to the beach. Dad was at work, but he told us the second he was done he'd come to us, so we decided we were going to make a sandcastle for him. In his honor, right, castle for a king.
So we spent an hour making this thing. Big towers, all structurally sound, and wouldn't you know it, the tide came in. Destroyed the thing in one go, and absolutely soaked us.
I cried. Most upset I'd ever been. [a little laugh.] But Dad came down and he saw the remains of the castle and he picked me up. And he says, "Karlach, we're going to build something twice as big. Don't let the fucking ocean win."
Think Mum scolded him for the language, but I was so determined to do it that I stopped crying in an instant.
