Caring and sympathy are similar enough threads in the same fabric, I would think. Not sure how you could be caring without being sympathetic, or vice versa.

This may be getting the weeds a little. They are connected, but when people speak of sympathy in this context, it is often to make it more shallow. That may not be your intention, but I do want to seem superficial.
