It could be the cult became aware or realized the four were trying to help us, or... someone did suggest this could be part of the sacrifice ritual method, but that doesn't make as much sense with what we've been told.

That's what I figured too -- if not, then why kidnap forty people and make 'em live together? Easier to just go out and kill forty people then.
